What is a Cat Café?

Cat cafes originated in Taipei, Taiwan in 1998.  The café became popular with tourists as well as local visitors, who enjoyed the opportunity to interact with some furry friends.

One of the tourists took the idea back to Japan, and the first Japanese cat café opened its doors in Osaka in 2004.  They’ve become very popular in Japan, with over 150 cat cafes across the country. Many apartments in Japan forbid animals to occupy the home so the popularity of the cafes has been attributed to a desire to interact with cats to help relieve the stress.

Expansion to the States

There is a desire for cat cafes across that states for the same reasons that there was a need in Japan. People enjoy interacting with cats in a relaxing setting.  Cafes in the states can be harder to manage as food and drink cannot be served in the same area where the cats habitat due to permitting restrictions. At Frank's Cat Café, we work to create a cohesive and interactive environment while still maintaining the sanitary standards that are required of a restaurant.

Benefit to the Cats

At Frank's Cat Café, all animals are able to be fostered or adopted.  We find that interacting with the cats increases chances of adoption and ensure that each cat has a high quality of life while staying at our café. We provide cats with an area where they can be void of human interaction should they choose to.  The welfare of our cats is of utmost importance at Franks and we have a rigorous adoption process to ensure that both human and cat are going to be a good fit together. We also believe that even if you come to Frank's Cat Café to grab a drink and simply socialize with the cats, this only helps build their trust and affection towards humans. We appreciate the attention that all of our visitors give the cats and make sure they feel loved and cared for.

Safety Precautions

Below are some items that we would like you to keep in mind prior to interact with the cats for their safety and yours:

  • Be respectful of the animals and learn their signals that you may need to dial back. We have posted signs describing the way cats show discomfort please keep these in mind when interacting with the animals.
  • Don’t pick up the cats as most prefer not to be held and to ensure that you or the cat does not get injured out of discomfort.
  • Children must be supervised at all times, we think that coming to the Frank's Cat Café is a great way to ensure that children are interacting with the cats respectfully.
  • Photography is fine but please omit the flash and be sure to share your images and tag us, it helps us get the word out and find more animals homes.
  • Frank's Cat Café will not tolerate any individual harming any animal, simply respect the rules outlined above and the animals.
